Change Desktop Location through Registry Editor. If resetting default Desktop location or changing the path of your Desktop to C: Windows system32 config systemprofile Desktop (where your system was searching) both didn’t work, you can manually reset the path taken by the system to your Desktop folder. On my version of Windows 7 the Desktop Background folders are located in the directory below: C:WindowsWebWallpaper; You can create your own folder, add it to the above directory, and then browse to that location to add it to the 'Picture Location' dropdown list within the 'Choose your desktop background' screen.

To open the real Desktop folder path in Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows-7, please start the MS-Explorer!

C:users or the command shell:UserProfiles, here you can see and modify all user folders, add copy or delete data. To have full access to all folders, of course, you need full administrator rights.

Can't find the desktop directory path

If the desktop is not found at the default location, you can find the current location by following the steps below.

  1. In Windows 8 and 10, open File Explorer. In Windows 7, click Start, then click Computer.
  2. In the navigation pane on the left side, right-click on Desktop and select Properties.
  3. In the Properties window, click the Location tab.
  4. The directory path to the desktop is displayed in the text field on the Location tab.

Windows 2000, 2003, and XP users

The desktop is located in the directory path below. In the examples below, you would replace the (username) with the name of the profile you use to log into Windows.
